The Mwani Zanzibar Mamas first came together as a collective to empower and grow their ability to support themselves resulting in economic independence and empowerment. With a deep connection to the ocean and its precious resources the women act as guardians of the ocean and the island.
Stories from these women who spend their lives in the sea are critical to the climate change narrative and can help others understand both the ecological and associated cultural losses we may endure on a warming planet. Their stories prove the power of local conservation action and indigenous knowledge in the face of climate change.
